Happy Birthday, 420!

Happy Birthday 420

*Eighteen* years ago this August, we opened.

Twenty-two, optimistic, recalcitrant, and broke….opening a head shop seemed, well, right. And so I did. Rented a spot, hired my friends, filled a couple of cases with a friend’s glass, and held my breath.

Turns out, it wasn’t an all together bad idea.  🙂

So many wonderful people have shaped and shared this experience with me that it’s hard to know where to begin. My staff has proved that being wickedly funny, kind, patient, dashing, and smart never go out of style. Their hard work is the foundation of the business. They are my family.

The Bloomington community has been a joy—such an eclectic and vibrant bunch of people. Your wants and feedback have been the springboard for growth and change. I can’t thank you enough for the loyalty and patience you have shown us through the years. I feel humbled by your support, tickled by your individuality, and kinship in our similar interests. Thanks for doing you!

And to the glassblowers. They have brought their own flavor and artistry to the tobacco industry. Watching their skills, businesses, and families grow has been a privilege. Thanks for creating!

The first eighteen years have been awesome sauce! Excited to see what the next decade brings!

From the offices at Middle Way House, Bloomington:

“Safe space is the first need of victims of domestic violence. It’s difficult to imagine what it must be like to feel unsafe at home – because someone in your family intentionally harms you. The battered women we have sheltered have spoken about not being safe from their partners’ assaults even in their sleeping hours.

Safety is such a basic need. And we need it with a basic response. Shelter, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Annually, it costs $106,000 to provide women and children with over 7000 nights of safe slumber.

Of course, we do more than that, because abused women and their children have a challenging road ahead. Starting over, usually with nothing, is incredibly daunting. Every family that exits shelter does so with donated household items from kitchenware to towels and bed linens, lamps, and alarm clocks. They leave with cell phones so they can contact emergency services if they are stalked and threatened by former partners.

They also leave with confidence in their ability to make a better future for themselves because while they were in shelter, they participated not only in needs assessments but in capacity identification as well. They’ve accessed legal advocacy. They’ve attended support group meetings, skill-building workshop sessions, and one-on-one assistance to articulate their goals and develop action plans.

Overwhelmingly, when they leave the emergency shelter, they do not return to abusive relationships. They really start over.

Many thanks for helping to sustain our life-saving, life-changing programs.”

Thanks to folks like you, we raised $768.00 for Middle Way House this April 20th. We look forward to raising even more next year!

E-Juice, Legislation, and YOU

RIP E-JUICE

Hello friends. You may have heard we are clearing out our e-juice lines, and the rumors are true. Thanks to Indiana Senate Bill 539, we will no longer be able to carry our flagship e-juice lines. This includes all of your current favorites – Stash, Bombies, and Predator.

This DOES NOT MEAN that we will stop selling e-juice. What SB 539 does – in short – is limit the variety of e-juice brands that can be sold in Indiana to those which have been produced by companies holding an Indiana license. While there are steps toward gaining this license being taken by some of our favorite brands, they have unfortunately not met the July 1st deadline, and will have to be discontinued in our store.

Starting July 1st, we will be carrying Indiana licensed juices comparable in quality to what we all currently love. WE WILL NOT STOP SELLING E-JUICE.

What that DOES MEAN, is that everything we currently have in stock is going on sale. Call it a Fire Sale, 50% off, or Buy One Get One Free – either way, it’s a goddamn fucking deal.

Come stock up on your favorite flavors before they are gone forever!

Appreciating The Art

One of the most commonly asked questions in our store is “Why is heady glass so expensive?” You look at pipes and you think, “Man, this all looks the same! Why is one piece only twenty bucks when this one I really dig is sixty? What is the difference?”

It is in the work, man.

The colorful, beautiful stuff takes patience and skill to create. There are hours of planning that go into certain pieces, and they may take as long – if not longer – to put together. Many intricate pipes take more than one day to assemble, once all the individual pieces are ready. When you buy a sixty dollar piece, you are not only paying for the materials, you are paying for the artist’s time. This may be the only income they have, and they have to put food on the table, too.

Speaking of materials, there is a lot more to glass than meets the eye. Each color you see in a piece is another glass rod being melted in. The more colors, the more money the artist is investing. And the more vivid the color, the higher the investment. Some colors go for $80 per pound! The same goes for thickness of glass. If you have any experience with glass art, you know some is heavier than others. This speaks to the density of the glass. And, as you may have guessed, the denser, better quality glass is more expensive than the thin stuff.

That’s not to say that cheaper pieces suck. If you are taking good care of it, a twenty dollar piece can go a long way. If you are clumsy – or have clumsy friends – you’re probably better off making a larger investment.

Sure, a portion of that money is going to us. But at that point, you are paying for the convenience of acquiring a piece that we took the time to look for. It is like you are trusting us to have good enough taste to offer the things you most want to see. It may look like employees here are just chillin’ out, but we do a lot of work, too. It takes time and an eye for the unique for us to gather the largest, most varied selection in the Midwest.

Thanks for shopping, and thanks for reading.

xoxo

WE’RE MOVING! Back…. 107 North Dunn St. 812-333-9420

WE’RE MOVING!

Hey folks! If you’ve been in either of our shops the last couple of weeks, you may have noticed some changes in the works. This is not an illusion.

For the past two years we have been sending folks down to the South Store for any and all hookah and e-cigarette merchandise. In the spirit of confusing you further, we are re-consolidating everything back into the North Store.

Just kidding. We don’t like confusing you. But we are moving back into the North Store.

Why, you ask?

New and exciting changes are coming! Stay tuned to learn more.
